Blessing of the Pets

Pastor David Harvey will hold a “Blessing of the Pets” on Sunday, May 15 beginning at 12:30 PM in the First Presbyterian Church parking lot at the corner of 1 Main and Bridge Streets. If you have a pet you want blessed (nothing venomous or dangerous, please), bring it to the church. Blessing of the Pets is generally associated with St. Francis of Assisi Day held the first Sunday of October. Pastor David prefers to hold it in the Spring when the event can be associated with Earth Day or Care of Creation Day which was April 23. In May, the warmer weather gives way to the renewal of creation and the invigoration of Spring. Lots of positive signs of growth in May — the pets of God for the people of God!Animals are integral to God’s creation. The psalmist says, “The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it” (Ps. 24:1). What lovely words. We are interconnected with and need each other to live in the global community of the Earth. As Patriarch Bartholomew observed, “How we treat the earth and all of creation defines the relationship that each of us has with God.” Echoing it, Rick Warren, author of the Purpose Driven Life, commented, “We cannot be all that God wants us to be without caring about the earth.” As human beings we are mutually connected to the Earth and all her resources. If you have a pet you want blessed, bring it to the church, May 15 between 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM. It’ll be a zoo!
